Let Your Numbers do the Talking

1196603520|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover - http://uxfeed.blogspot.com/2007/12/let-your-numbers-do-talking.html
Ah yes, the great marketing vs finance debate. It happens to all of us at one point or another. Here's an example of how it often occurs: Finance wants to audit the spend by marketing in an effort to ensure the effectiveness of the department by calculating the function's ROI. The marketing department, feeling threatened, steps up for a fight and chaos ensues. Why? A good finance department (much less a good company) should be concerned with the performance of it's marketing endeavors. As designers and marketers we should be able to prove our worth to an organization when the bean counters come calling. So why do many marketing and design leaders always seem to be so unprepared?

I often find that marketers and designers get too caught up in the execution of a marketing project or initiative that they forget to properly plan for and incorporate proper tracking and analysis as a part of the overall strategy. This lack of planning inevitably leads to the aforementioned "chaos" as well as something even more destructive: a lack of truly understanding what makes your campaigns work (or not).

Ok. So what do I do?
Barring a little bit of "math anxiety", we can get these rather unpleasant situations to stop by simply implementing a couple basic techniques:

1. Keep your campaigns segmented -
One of the cardinal sins in the analysis of any marketing effort is not effectively separating revenue and cost between channels. While working with a mid-size retailer this year, I found that they had no idea what sales were being driven online from their seven digit direct-mail spend and inversely what sales were being driven via phone from their webstore. A simple solution to this was to setup separate 1-800 numbers for each channel and separate domain names with a simple Google Analytics source tag script. Once complete, the retailer was able to directly attribute phone and web orders that were specific to their individual marketing efforts.

If you have the tools to get into even more advanced segmentation techniques, (such as source codes or coupon codes) use them. Segmentation only leads to a better understanding of your customers and can eventually open the door to creating highly targeted communications.

2. Track whatever you can track -
On the interactive-side of things this can be a no-brainier. Utilizing tools like Omniture or even Google Analytics (free) you can add simple tags in order to track the effectiveness of your campaigns. At a minimum you will want to track some basic metrics by referring source: Visits, Goals, Revenue (if applicable), COGS (if applicable) and Conversions. For the print-side of the equation you will want to track the same however you will simply replace "visits" with "total distribution".

3. Don't track whatever you can't track reliably and effectively -
All too often I work with marketing and design groups that try to go from zero tracking and analysis to what I often refer to as "total visibility". There is nothing wrong with this if you can do it right, but trying to track dollar for dollar on an integrated print/interactive/broadcast campaign without the right tools is a lesson in futility. Don't try to bite off more than you can chew. For items that you can't track, make sure you know what they are and then simple aggregate them together at the bottom line at the end of your period. Once you remove what you DID track, then you should be able to create a general view of the campaigns that you just weren't able to get full visibility to.

4. Once you have the data... share it!
One of the best ways to keep the accounting / marketing battle to occuring in the first place is to make sure that you are communicating regularly with them. Sit down with finance and talk about the great data that you are now able to provide. Develop a standardized reporting format with them and distribute it to them and any other stakeholders at least quarterly.

Commerce Beyond the Pixel

1194636420|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover - http://uxfeed.blogspot.com/2007/11/commerce-beyond-pixel.html
When designing an online commerce experience it can be tempting to focus entirely on the tactical user experience. While many may argue that the "E" in E-Commerce sufficiently narrows the scope of the designer's work to those activities located between the splash page and checkout, this is no way to design a positive user experience.

As user experience specialists, our value is best expressed when sharing our thorough understanding of a target user group and how they will be best served both online and off.

User experience design is more than skin deep

Limiting ourselves to the bounds of the pixel is ultimately inhibiting our ability to create truly exceptional experiences for our users and our clients. A great example of this is Amazon.com - Cringe - I know, I know, it is a UI designer's nightmare in many regards, but it is a good example because Amazon has been successful in spite of it's often woeful interface. Why? There is nothing particularly interesting or unique about the products they distribute, their "recommendations" algorithm is cumbersome and beginning to fall behind the curve, and they have competition in the form of direct retailers coming at them from all angles. There is obviously something else in the way that they conduct commerce online that is appealing to users.

Give the customer what they want
Amazon does a great job of satisfying the major points of the retail online shopping experience. Most notably these include the basic user concerns of "What?", "When?" and "How Much?". They take great care in ensuring that their shopping experience addresses those issues in their most common manifestations which are pricing, inventory availability, shipping times, shipping rates, and taxes.

User Experience Feed Example - Andrew Sliwinski
Pricing, for example, is always shown as a list including: List Price, Sale Price, and Cost Savings. This process eliminates (after the discerning consumer validates the figures a couple times) common compare and contrast shopping habits that often plague those responsible for reducing abandonment rates. In addition, this practice quickly establishes the perception of Amazon as a discount or "bargain" online retailer. Inventory availability is shown clearly along with delivery information at this point as well, thus answering most of major "When?" and "How Much?" questions before a user even adds the item into the cart. All of these components have a significant impact on the user's experience in the form of a very simple metric - conversion rate.

The holy grail

Conversion rate for many online retailers is seen as the primary metric for measuring a site's performance because it is most often an incredibly effective means for calculating projected ROI and when implemented properly is generally very accurate. As user experience designers we set the baseline, the primary architecture that can scale and flex in order to accommodate the needs of our client and their customers. That said, we always need to be cognizant of the fact that a simple task like better informing your user of their shipping and tax costs can impact the bottom line much more meaningfully than that fancy AJAX trick that you may be inclined to implement.

So if you are a designer that is inclined to keep quiet during discussions with a client that involve words like "operations", "fulfillment" and "inventory", it may be time to start learning. UX Design is about best serving the user, and it takes more than pixels to satisfy most of them.

Sketch-3D is an interactive, integrated software/hardware system that enables users to create their own anaglyphic 3D drawings. By using a ubiquitous interface metaphor (the "Etch-A-Sketch"), Sketch-3D allows anyone to participate in generating stereoscopic imagery in a way that is simple and engaging. In addition to the personal experience, Sketch-3D can be scaled to work with any output device from large scale projection to plasma displays to an integrated LCD. This versatility allows for Sketch-3D to be tailored to fit a wide array of installation environments.

Anaglyph images are used to provide a stereoscopic 3D effect, when viewed with 2 color glasses (each lens a chromatically opposite color, commonly red and cyan). Images are made up of two color layers, superimposed, but offset with respect to each other to produce a depth effect. Usually the main subject is in the center, while the foreground and background are shifted laterally in opposite directions. The picture contains two differently filtered colored images, one for each eye. When viewed through anaglyphic 3D glasses, they reveal an integrated stereoscopic image. The visual cortex of the brain fuses this into perception of a three dimensional scene or composition.

Sketch 3D utilizes a mixture of software in order to function as an integrated hardware / software system. Running on top of the Pico-ITX x86 SBC, is Windows Embedded Standard which provides a fair amount of OS flexibility without consuming limited system resources. On top of the OS sits two applications which o2 developed.

The first application is a service that provides an intermediary between the sensor interface and the main application. Using serial (TTL) communication over USB, this service handles the communication of data between the micro-controller on the sensor interface board and the main application.

The main application was constructed using the Unity game development environment which allows for efficient handling of realtime 3D graphics. The application essentially uses two 3D "cameras" that simulate the viewer's left and right eyes. These two cameras then output graphics using an anaglyphic (Red / Cyan) multiply effect thus creating the illusion of the drawing being truly three dimensional. As the user moves the three control knobs, polygons are created that move along the X, Y and Z axis forming a stereo anaglyph. As the user draws, the three axis accelerometer detects changes in the orientation of the device and rotates the camera around the 3D drawing giving users the flexibility to view their drawing from all angles. To erase, the user simply shakes the device which is detected through a series of sensor output "spikes" along the X and Y axis from the accelerometer (much like an "Etch-A-Sketch").

In addition to these two central components, Sketch 3D also uses a SATA to Compact Flash (CF) converter board to allow for the use of low-weight CF media and an LCD inverter / backlight board that provides both power and VGA signal to the device's TFT LCD Display. A single multi-output regulated +12vdc power supply provides power to the SBC, Sensor Board and Display.

    Toyota - Prius Reveal Media

One of my responsibilities for Toyota's press reveal of the 3rd generation Prius was the creation of a large scale media piece. The piece, which was played as the car drove on-stage from the back of the house, measured approximately 72 feet wide by 12 feet tall and was displayed using an array of 8 projectors on a rear-projection surface.

This frame, taken from the opening moment of the piece, was generated in Maya and After Effects.
