Poke New York is the US office of Poke London. The office opened in New York in May, 2007. The firm has three partners: Tom Ajello (creative director), Aaron Rutledge (user experience + technology) and Michael Kantrow (managing director) which forms a triumvirate of design, technology/ux and business management.
Before their full site launch, the company gained much buzz in the industry for placing a video feed of a live view of the office on their homepage, where visitors can chat live with anyone at the office. You can now get to it at http://live.pokenewyork.com

Meet Sephora Claus. She’s sassy, she’s fun, she only comes around once a year, and for goodness sake she has to know what you want for the holidays. She’s making a list, she's listening all day, and every day until December 19th she will grant one beauty wish to a lucky tweeter.

Sephora Claus is receiving over 10,000 wishes per week and she knows exactly what everyone’s lusting for this season. Why not hop online and ask her?
Tell Sephora Claus your holiday wish and finally get something you really want!
The Benji Menendez Social

Take one of the greatest cigar Masters ever, partner him with one of the most steadfast and well-known cigar manufacturers in the country, and sit back to watch what comes out of the collaboration: The Benji Menendez Partagas Master Series Majestuoso. The Master is Cuban cigar legend Benji Menendez and he's worked with Partagas Cigars (part of the General Cigar Company) to create only 5,000 boxes of this new cigar. To celebrate their newest creation, General Cigar Company asked POKE to help design and execute a marketing program to introduce the Benji Menendez cigar to new and veteran smokers alike and to support the Partagas brand.
With that brief, we set out to orchestrate The Benji Menendez Social, a roaming speakeasy that will make stops in five cities across the US. Dallas marked the spot for the first event. The party went down Tuesday evening at Sullivan's Steakhouse and was a resounding success! We had somewhere around 200 people stop by to smoke, drink, and enjoy some engaging conversation (along with appetizers and live music). Over the course of the next four weeks, similar events will follow in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, and finally on our home turf here in New York – but we can't tell you where quite yet. In the spirit of a true speakeasy, you'll have to hunt down a personal password to be allowed in the door, and the event locations in each city won't be revealed until 36 hours in advance.
In conjunction with an on-the-ground event team from Impact365, POKE has laid the groundwork for an experience that begins via a combination of social outreach, word-of-mouth, and dedicated print media spread through hand-selected retailers. All of these resources push smokers to www.benjimenendezsocial.com where they can be added to our guest list and share a password with a few close friends, creating a waterfall of pass-along amongst an exclusive group of in-the-know people. All of this culminates in the events where those who have RSVP'd will be among the first to try the new, limited-edition Benji cigar while enjoying a cocktail and the requisite ambiance that one would expect from a true speakeasy.
Not bad for a few weeks' work!
Meet Ruby
Poke has a new mascot named Ruby! She is a 10-week-old King Charles Chihuahua mix (Chilier) adopted from a rescue in New Jersey. Ruby keeps her 3.6 lb figure by hopping and running in circles. She loves her Busy Bee, long walks to her puppy pad, making people commit crimes with her adorableness and the internet. Check her out between naps on the Poke Cam live.pokenewyork.comour internz are heroz

Our Interz are Heroz! We sent in a photo and Little Debbie is sending us 5 boxes of muffins early next week. We can't wait to stuff our faces with delicious muffins!
What is Intern Hero, you ask?
"In these tough economic times, more and more companies are relying on interns to get the job done. The hours are long, the rewards are few, the pay is meager. The interns of America deserve more. They deserve to be heroes." -Little Debbie
YAY.

POKE is up for FOUR Webby's!
We're psyched! For the fifth year in a row, POKE is up for a (or in this case, four) Webby People's Voice awards. Help us land a trophy or two by signing up and voting on the Webby site. The Balloonacy Campaign for Orange has been nominated in three categories and our work with Lonely Planet has been nominated once. You have to register and login at the Webby website before you can cast your vote, and there's a myriad of categories, so we hope the following directions (and shameless back-handers) sweeten the deal enough to convince you to partake.
Once you're signed up and in, hit the Website icon on the left hand side first. Scroll down to 'Services' and you'll find Orange's Balloonacy in Telecommunications and Lonely Planet in Travel. Then head to the Interactive Advertising light bulb icon on the top right hand side of the page. Here Balloonacy is nominated twice, first in Game or Application and then Online Guerilla & Innovation. Make sense?
At the time of writing, Lonely Planet is in the lead, with Balloonacy needing a bump up from third and fourth places in the other categories.
We're grateful for any help you can offer (and bribes can be discussed on the sly).
From POKE with Love: BakerTweet!
1244124396|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
Last week we launched a new toy that crosses the chasm between physical and digital. (Something in case you haven't noticed, we get pretty excited about). The digital guinea pig was the great crew at Albion (a bakery across the way from our office in London). And, since "Everyone knows the best time to get your baked goods is when they're fresh out the oven," they figured they'd combine the always-on communication offered by Twitter with the delicious bakery goodness from Albion to create BakerTweet.
BakerTweet is a new device that's bakery-safe – you don't really want your precious laptop sitting next to the baking soda – and offers a simple interaction model: twist the knob until the hot-outa-the-oven baked good displays on the screen, then hit the button to tweet to the world that the baked goods are available. Want to know more? Check out our video here:
Sound cool? Well the world seems to think so! BakerTweet has been covered on Engadget, Apartment Therapy, Slashgear, and, of course, it's all over The Tweet.
Coming soon to a bakery near bakery near you?
Want one? Give us a shout at: iwantone@bakertweet.com.
POKE wins an Andy AND a Titanium Lion*
*(sorta).
So, a while back we partnered with the awesome crew over at Droga5 to help them develop the Million, a project in conjunction with the New York City public school system that aims to ignite students' interests in their studies by offering a free cell phone that's fueled by merit-based achievements (grades, attendance, etc.). The pilot program was rolled out to 10,000 students across a number of schools last year. Despite some initial skepticism from parents and teachers, the response from students was both immediate and eye-opening!
It was a true partnership where POKE worked hand in hand with the fine folks at Droga to create a comprehensive digital and mobile strategy along with a full-term roll-out plan on how to take Million to the world. It was countless hours of work for a terriffic cause and we're glad to hear some of that work is paying off.
Congratulations are in order!
Last night Droga5 accepted an award for both The Richard T. O’Reilly Award (for Public Service Announcement) and The Innovation Award at the ANDY's. Rumor has it the Million also received a Titanium Lion at the 2008 Cannes Lion advertising festival!
Congrats Droga. Send us a photo of the awards, woudja?

With all of the talk about Skittles over the last couple of weeks, sometimes it’s tough to remember that there are other candies out there. But just to keep things on an even keel, we created a fun little tool that let you create your own Snickers logo styled with any word you want. (Think of it as a roll-your-own version of their print campaign.) Which all-in-all, we thought was pretty damn cool, but perhaps missing a playful social element to its playful brandcast message.
Snckrz.com was launched on March 3rd, and lasted a full 8 days - with more SpaceBook, MyFace posts, blog embeds, and Tweets like this, this, this, this and say.... this - than any candybar has any right to stake claim to. But it happened. And it was good. Good for the brand and good for peeple. And that's what it's all 'bout eh?
We think so. What do you think?
What us POKE peeps do in our spare time...
1251987732|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
Believe it or not, we're a little nerdy/geeky here at POKE (shocking, I know!). So what do nerdy/geeky peeps do in their spare time? Well, some of us code, some of us make sweet guitar interfaces, and some of us...compile lists of every Twitter tool online that we can find. And then cull them down to the 15 that are worth looking at first.
Take a look, pass them along, enjoy. There's a tool for just about everything under the sun (and we're workin' on another here in the office for something that hasn't been covered yet!). And give us a shout on Twitter (we're all floating around, but you can catch me @AmongMany and Tom @meat99).
Meet Push. A program for internz.
1241308800|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
Update!:
Our next PUSH term will start on Monday, September 14th. If you're interested in joining up during the fall, submit your video ASAP.
What is PUSH?:
This just might be a great opportunity for both of us. For you, it’s a chance to work with really fun (and talented) people who love what they do. For us, it’s an amazing chance to bring in some the best up-and-coming talent out there.
Sound good? Great! Except there’s one little catch. We POKERs like to dive in head first. In keeping with the spirit of that, we're going to need to see you do the same. Here's how you can apply:
You'll have to submit a video.
It'll be put into a gallery up against other rising stars for the world to see. So, make it awesome :) We promise, we’ll make it worth your while. If you don’t suck, that is.
What goes in my video, Ma?
Whatever you want, really. Just be sure it gives us a good sense of why you are POKE material. Introduce yourself and tell us what you bring to the table! Showcase your skills! Shave your cat! Whatever it takes. (No RickRolling pls.) And try to keep it to around 3-minutes please!
Right, so where do I put my video?
Another good question, Billy. Head over to Vimeo and upload your video there. Then, after you've done that, shoot us an email wouldya? push@pokenewyork.com.
The FAQ's...
- "What type of peeps are you lookin' for?": The SMART kind! We need a couple of whip-smart developers to help us bring some cool ideas to life. We also need some ninjas and gurus who know CSS, strategy, social media, UX and interaction design, and some awesome pixel pushers.
- "Is the internship paid?": Yes and no. There's no paycheck involved; this is an experience internship. BUT, we know how tough it can be getting started, so we'll spring for lunch when you're here and a metrocard to help you get home at night.
- "Do I have to be available full-time?": That would be ideal, but we can be flexible. Make an impression that leads us to believe we can't live without you, and we'll take what we can get.
- "Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?": YES. We understand that working without pay for a summer can be tough. But the truth is, this is a tough industry. We're offering you a chance to show your chops on REAL projects. If you do that during your internship, then yes, there is the potential for you to be hired.
- "My school requires some forms and other BS in order for me to get credit for an internship...": No problem. You take care of getting all that stuff in front of us, and we'll get it signed so you get all the credit you can.
Let the games begin!
The fine print (be sure you READ THIS)...
While we don't have a specific submission deadline, we have received a number of videos already and we're beginning to line things up with people. If you want to submit and you haven't, GET ON IT ASAP! Also keep in mind, there's no set end date for this term, but we generally shoot for 2-3 month engagements.
Performa. Up close and personal.
Ever been to a "museum without walls" that "uses New York City as a canvas"? That's how RoseLee Goldberg, Performa's Founder and Director describes the organization. Performa was created to encourage and support artists from around the world expressing themselves through live performance art. And it's on a mission to push all forms of living and breathing creativity and artistic expression far forward. The culmination of this results in "Biennials" organized by Performa and staged in New York City — in and around the most interesting and amazing venues — every other year.
In today's world, we thought what better way to spread their creative love, and the work of these amazing participating artists, than to bring it all online in all of its digital glory. To each and everyone. In your face, front and center, as close to "live" as we could get it. An interactive, command performance of works created and performed in NYC, but now open to the world. Experiences begin right in front of you online, and will continue offline as Peforma 09 hits the Big Apple again in November. And this is only the start. POKE is continuing work in partnership with Performa in the coming months in preparation for Performa 09 — which is thematically tied to Futurism. So keep an eye out for more digitally-driven, futuristic creative collaboration from POKE and Performa in the coming weeks and months. Here's to the future!
Thanks for Breakfast Mom!
Our usual "breakfast spread" on a Monday morning consists of a bucket o' Starbucks coffee that's supposed to wake us all up for our mandatory morning status meeting. But yesterday was a different story. Yesterday was President's Day. Yesterday our bretheren at Mother were out of the office, leaving their full spread of Dean & Deluca catered breakfast sitting unattended. And we just couldn't settle for that!
So instead of letting it all go to waste, it became ours. And boy did it put a cup'o Farbucks joe to shame! Sixty people's worth of smoked salmon, fresh fruit, bagels & cream cheese, danishes, and fresh-squeezed OJ was enough to make us all pretty happy on a holiday Monday. Not to mention pretty full... We ate it for breakfast. We ate it for lunch. Heck, some of us even ate it for dinner. And ya know what?? There was still some left this morning!
So here's a big thanks to Mother for taking a day off. May you have many more Monday holidays (just as long as you forget to cancel the breakfast order again)!
Meet KideoPlayer: Family safe YouTube
Today we are launching KideoPlayer. (Go ahead, click it!) A fun and safe way to "channel surf" YouTube.
the backstory
As a creatively-focused web nerd and as a parent of two young boys under the age of 2, I (@meat99 to my Tweet peeps) try to keep my family engaged with what is happening online, including interacting with, sharing and viewing of safe content. Having sat down to try and find this safe content with my boys a couple of times now, I can tell you it is not easy to locate. If you search long enough for YouTube content that is appropriate, it always returns search results with wonderful gems to share, but, they are usually sitting right next to something questionable - if not - down right offensive.I was amazed to see how little has been done to help curate they sea of online video content in a way that makes it easy, interesting, and fun for parents and kids to experience together. Online video and simple interactivity can be a great source of entertainment and learning for the whole family. Someone just needs to care enough to make it so.
how it works
I will spend my free time sourcing, identifying and curating the safest, most educational (and most FUN) YouTube videos I can find. This ongoing list of videos will be served up in a simple little interactive package that I can sit down and play with my boys. I call this package "KideoPlayer."And since I'm doing this online (and the web is as social as social can be) you get the benefit of all my hard work. Yay!
how KideoPlayer is interactive
KideoPlayer is based on POKE's UPL8.TV framework (@neonarcade's brainchild) It allows for easy video surfing by using your keyboard (spacebar) to "skip" forward to the next interesting thing. UPL8 is also cool because you can search YouTube using the URL field. For example, entering http://upl8.tv/hamster+dance basically rolls your own rediculous hamster dance mash up channel. Pure poetry.
Ok, back to kids...
KideoPlayer works the same way. Only different. :) It seems that YouTube's G-Rated filter has some flaws. You see, KideoPlayer can't reliably search only "Safe" areas of YouTube right from the URL bar as some questionable content still sneaks through. As such, we've built in a work-around.
Typing http://kideoplayer.com/babyeinstein still executes a search. The only difference is that it searches "locally" — only sifting through the library of videos that I am curating. Neat huh? Just by typing that you've rolled your very own "Baby Einstein" channel. From there, you can keep using it like the regular KideoPlayer features, and use the spacebar to get to the next Baby Einstein video (in this case). Bear with us! As I tag more video from behind the scenes, these search queries will get more and more robust.
As parents, it is up to us to be informed about what and how our children play and to make appropriate choices on their behalf. Fortunately, there are many tools and resources that we as parents can utilize to be better parents in the information age. Perhaps someday, this will be one of them.In the meantime, enjoy! Oh, and remember parents - watch with your kids and slap the spacebar for the next clip!
Love,
Tom and your friends at POKE.

What do you get when you mix beer, nerds, knives and melons? I don't know but probably smells like the corner of the 6th floor here at POKE. Peek at the hilarious hijinx here. (Thanks Rich for all the shootin'!)How do you spell change?
1221062305|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
Dear friends, go to http://www.spellingchange.com/ and spread the CHANGE that is important to you.
As we move ever-closer to the upcoming election, it's only natural that we take a moment to take stock of, and reflect on, the current state of affairs in our country. Amidst a variety of often-polarized opinions, amidst what can only be deemed a financial crisis, we find ourselves in a unique position. We find ourselves faced with an opportunity that only presents itself every four years – a time period that's proving vast despite it's consistent measure of passage. We're faced with an opportunity to make a difference...an opportunity for CHANGE.
POKE has teamed up with a few people from Mother and other creative professionals around the world to ask "How do you spell CHANGE?" The challenge we've posed to our artist and designer friends is simple: show us how you spell CHANGE by reinterpreting one letter of the alphabet in a way that represents what Obama's candidacy means to you. Their letters were then printed on t-shirts and given to photographers who took pictures of them worn by enthusiastic Obama supporters, creating a living alphabet.
But that is just the beginning. The challenge that began with our friends and colleagues we're now issuing to the world... Stand up and take part! Make a difference! Voice your CHANGE! Everyone can take part in our effort by designing a letter of your own and submitting it to the collection at SpellingChange.com. Or, create your own personal statement using the letters we've collected to spell your own words and phrases demonstrating support for Obama and for CHANGE in our country.
Everyone can help to aid the Obama campaign by spelling "change" in their own unique way. Use these inspired letters and photographs to email an important message to a friend or to post some words meaningful to you on your blog. Your words and phrases can also be custom-ordered on t-shirts, posters, bumper stickers, and post cards, allowing you to voice your CHANGE out in the world.
Oh and, before anyone mentions it: yes, we recognize the irony of a campaign created by a bunch of internet liberals trying to prove that Obama's supporters are more than just coffee shop liberals. But we're "real" Americans, too. And we know that we're just the tip of the iceberg. Please help us show the true range of Barack Obama's appeal and bring authentic CHANGE to Washington.
