  • Facebook | Needle in a haystack: efficient storage of billions of photos / The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users have uploaded over 15 billion photos which makes Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly. At the peak there are 550,000 images served per second. These numbers pose a significant challenge for the Facebook photo storage infrastructure. / 1258937760|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
  • Report: 55 percent of Americans play video games : Ben Patterson : Yahoo! Tech / As it turns out, our gaming populace is big—really big—and growing like a virus. About 169.9 million Americans picked up a gaming controller, fired up a PC game, or played an online match in 2008—a figure (as GameSpot points out) that accounts for a good 55 percent of the U.S. population (not to mention an increase of 4.3 million from 2007). Among the largest of seven gaming "groups" identified in the NPD reports is "secondary gamers," a 33.6 million-strong club (or about 21 percent of the overall U.S. gaming population) of "mostly female gamers who play less than four hours a week and don't own a console," according to GameSpot. Next up: console gamers, who account for about 19 percent of the pie (and growing rapidly, GameSpot reports). After that, you've got your "heavy portable gamers," followed by "extreme gamers" who lock and load nearly 40 hours a week. / 1258385160|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

  • The Average Internet User Spends 68 Hours Online Per Month - Internet - Lifehacker / According to research conducted by the Nielsen company (you know, the TV ratings folks), the average internet user now spends 68 hours online per month. That may sound like a lot, but it only comes out to an average of about two and a quarter hours a day—something we'd guess many Lifehacker readers demolish. So how about you? 68 hours seem about right? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments. [Nielsen via Mashable] / 1255860600|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover
  • Twitter Bots Post 24 Percent of the Tweets - While only 5 percent of the users make up 75 percent of the tweets - Softpedia / “We found that 32% of all tweets made by the most active Twitter users were generated by machine bots that posted more than 150 tweets/day. The actual percentage of machine-generated tweets among the most active users is probably higher than 32% because there [are] many bots that update less than 150 times/day,” Of the most prolific 5 percent of Twitter users, 60.6 percent are from the US, followed by the UK with 6.9 percent, Japan with 4.7 percent and Canada with 4.3 percent. An interesting aspect is the gender distribution, as 54 percent of them are male; this while, overall, men make up for only 46 percent of the Twitter users. Somewhat to be expected, 48 percent of these active users have more than 100 followers. via http://friendfeed.com/sofarsoshawn / 1255170000|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

TweetPsych uses two linguistic analysis algorithms (RID and LIWC) to build a psychological profile of a person based on the content of their tweets. The service analyzes your last 1000 tweets and works best on users who have posted more than 1000 updates. It also works best on accounts that are operated by a single user and use Twitter in a conversational manner, rather than simply a content distribution platform.

TweetPysch is created by Dan Zarella.
