Image 2+3! #smlthankyou May I just say that it is *really* difficult to compete with all the other acronyms which mean SML?! During my research in creating the SML Branding strategy, I discovered the following folks I need to compete with: + SML = S&P Smallcap 600 index + SML = Saab Medical Library + SML = School of Modern Languages + SML = Scott Memorial Library + SML = Seattle Men in Leather + SML = Secure Mailing List + SML = Security Market Line + SML = See-ming Lee + SML = Seemingly Markup Language + SML = Seemingly Marked-up Language + SML = Seemingly Mutated Lifeform + SML = Self Managed Learning + SML = Semantic Markup Language + SML = Service Management Layer + SML = Service Modeling Language + SML = Sexy Male Love + SML = Shared Memory Link + SML = Shoals Marine Laboratory + SML = Short Medium Long + SML = Siemens Modular Link + SML = Simple Markup Language + SML = Single Mature Lad + SML = Sitzmann Morris Lavis + SML = Small Medium Large + SML = Smart Markup Language + SML = Smith Mountain Lake + SML = Software Measurement Laboratory + SML = Soldat Mappers League + SML = Southern Men's League + SML = Spacecraft Markup Language + SML = Standard ML + SML = Standard Machine Language + SML = Standard Meta Language + SML = Statistical Machine Learning + SML = Steel Markup Language + SML = Sterling Memorial Library + SML = Strategically Mutated Lifeform + SML = Structured Modeling Language + SML = Syndicat des Medécins Libéraux http://wiki.seeminglee.com/sml Know of any other SML? The Awful Making of an Optimist by James A. Reeves (@Kinosport) #books #photography #video #interview
The Awful Making of an Optimist is a book by American designer, photographer and writer James A. Reeves (aka kinosport). James drove around America and documented what he saw in the book through writing and photography. The back cover reads: "There was a time when the road to manhood was clear: go to war, find a job with a big company, wear a tie, and start a family. Then the wars got strange and companies changed. What does it take to be a man in America today? Here is an answer as sprawling and chaotic as the country itself… One day James realized he no longer understood his country or what he should be doing in it. He decided to go for a drive to clear his head. The Awful Making of an Optimist is a scattershot journey through the neon corridors and dark corners of America. Cattle auctions in Texahoma. Oil fires burning across the Venice Jump Basin. Kids collecting cosmic rays in the desert. Subway preachers in Brooklyn and security concerns along the Mississippi. Staring at Mexicali through a chain link fence in Calexico. Thirty thousand miles, twelve speeding tickets, and several moments of unexpected kindness, all set to the nervous chatter of talk radio and 24-hour diners as James drives along the back roads taking pictures and looking for answers — and drifts towards a slow reckoning with his own compulsions and unexpected loss." You can read more about the book on his blog at http://kinosport.tv/project... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

One more thing I noticed is that while I usually don't care much about white balance shooting raw - I can't really do that with video as it's already compressed when I get the video, and tweaking white point on the video is close to impossible to get weird color artifacts... I wonder if you can shoot video raw... :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

"I learned about Aardvark a week ago on FriendFeed. No idea what it is at first but I'm instantly hooked. For a long while now I have been using http://ask.metafilter.com to get answers, but these usually take a long time. And a while back MeFi decided that they are getting too much traffic and they set a limit to 1 question per day. Not good. foldunfold Table of Contents About the service Example 1: My question about Creative Commons Example 2: My question about Copyright Law Example 3: My question about the origin of != Conclusion More Tools on SML Wiki About the service So what is Aardvark, you ask? Aardvark is a web app that taps into your Facebook network to find answers for you. This btw is also the first time I've signed up for any services using Facebook Connect! flickr:4022557094 When I click the join using Facebook Connect button, the site asked my permission to import my profiles, and the based on my interests on Facebook, automatically added categories where I may have answers for (smart!) Then it noted the different networks I'm in (New York, Yale, IconNicholson) and pulled up all the contacts on my Facebook who are already on my network to my contact list. Nifty! No manual import necessary! flickr:4022567352 So basically you ask a question on the site and it looks for your friends and those in your network to find an answer. You can ask questions via conventional channels like emails or on the web site, but it also has tight integration support with IM (gtalk) and Twitter. Example 1: My question about Creative Commons For example, let's say that you have a question about creative commons (which I did) I tweeted this: SA vs ND: Does ND prohibits cropping or add typography on top of my photography? @vark #creativecommons http://twitter.com/seeming... Immediately I receive multiple responses via IM. I can type my reply for further questions via IM, or I can get onto the site to type longer paragraphs. When you send your questions via Twitter, Aardvark also DM a message when you've got replies. Very handy. Example 2: My question about Copyright Law Yesterday I had a question regarding copyright law because someone suggested that I do not have the right to tweet about his photo because they are copyrighted, even though all I did was post a link to his photo (wtf?!), so I tweeted this: Is tweeting about a @Flickr photo against the copyright law? @vark #law #copyright http://twitter.com/seeming... Well surely enough I got replies. And interestingly I noted that the replies I received are from the Yale network, possibly from Yale Law? Maybe, no clue, but the important bits is that I've received very helpful advice and feedback regarding my queries. In the past I just ask questions openly on Twitter but generally speaking that doesn't help much. Trying to look for friends who 'might' know the answer is also not too easy. Example 3: My question about the origin of != Questions asked on Aardvark need not be at all serious. I told you about my questions regarding #copyright #law and #creativecommons, but here I ask about the origin of != and I learned that before C there was B! flickr:4021824613 SML: Someone asks me what the origin of != is from. Any geek knows? Peter V.: oldest use i'm aware of is in the C programming language SML: Thanks!!! Peter V: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... looks like it was also used in C's predecessor, B SML: Wow now that's helpful!!! Tweeted: http://twitter.com/seeming... :D Peter V. Your contribution is perma-noted at http://wiki.seeminglee.com/sml-tha... !!! :) Conclusion I'm definitely a happy camper. Highly recommended! Much thanks to the developers who created this!" - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

"Since publishing Meta Search Alerts (Yahoo Pipes) (Flickr screenshot / SML Pro Blog / SML Wiki) back in 2007, it has become to most popular pipe ever created. It even popped onto ReadWriteWeb's The Ultimate Yahoo Pipes List in 2008. And perhaps even more bizarre was discovering that somehow CNet had stuck a software publisher profile for me on Download.com earlier this year! SML Thank You!!! Meta Search Alerts was originally created for my own vanity searches, but then I started using it on SML Wiki so I can track people and things more easily. This is great until I started writing very long description of photos on Flickr after realising that photos are often referenced as a singular entity — that while you would prefer that people check out the entire set to see the description of the info, most simply don't have the time and patience to do look at them. For the sake of human browsing, including long description (for example, full bio about an artist that I photographed) in everyone of my photographs about them is useful when items are referenced singularly, but then if you know what you are looking for and wish to cluster them in a single place, the content become repetitive and tired after a very brief instant. Meta Search Alerts Digest Screenshot: http://pipes.yahoo.com/seeming... Meta Search Alerts Digest / 2009-10-09 / SML Pipes (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML) This is why I created a baby version called Meta Search Alerts Digest. In essense, this pipe uses Meta Search Alerts as a subpipe, then loop through both the item.description and the item.media:description and limit them to 1000 characters. A sample of this pipe in action can be seen at http://wiki.seeminglee.com/people:... And you can compare the difference between its grand daddy and itself here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/metasea... http://feeds.feedburner.com/metasea... Note: The reason why I use Feedburner to subscribe to feed is because that for whatever reasons, Yahoo Pipes RSS tends to generate errors when subscribed via normal means. Many feed reader would complain that it's not a valid feed. By using FeedBurner to burn the feed, that problem goes away. An additionally good aspect about using FeedBurner is that you also get analytics data that comes with it, which is useful - particularly if you wish to use it to feed TwitterFeed etc. Meta Search Alerts (grand daddy version) Screenshot: http://pipes.yahoo.com/seeming... Yahoo Pipes: Meta Search Alerts / 2007-10-27 / SML (by See-ming Lee 李思明 SML) For folks who are not familiar with my original pipe, this is what it does: 1. Aggregates these search results simultaneously: + del.icio.us + Findory + Flickr + Google Blog Search + Google News + Google Search + Icerocket + Live News Search + Live Search + Technorati + Yahoo News + Yahoo Search 2. Filters the results and ensures that the links are unique. 3. Sorts the results by date such that the latest addition onto the pool will appear at the top of the list. In other words, it acts as an RSS feed alerts for all these search engines.
